WINTER THEMED RELIEF PRINTS
BIG IDEA: Students will create a winter themed relief print with water soluble ink.
KEY KNOWLEDGE:
KEY KNOWLEDGE:
- How to make use of readily available recycled trays while discovering techniques of master artists through history.
- What is a relief print? Relief printing is a family of printing methods where a printing block, plate or matrix that has had ink applied to its surface, but not to any recessed areas, is brought into contact with paper. The areas of the printing plate with ink will leave ink on the paper, whereas the recessed areas of the printing plate will leave the paper ink-free. A printing press may not be needed, as the back of the paper can be rubbed or pressed by hand with a simple tool such as a brayer or roller.

William Seltzer Rice (1873-1963) was an artist within the Arts and Crafts movement and well known for his block printing which allowed the opportunity to combine his skills of draftsmanship, carving, and printing. California's flora, fauna, and landscapes--from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific--were the subjects that fed his creativity. |
Hirokazu Fukuda (1944-2004) (whose real name is Hiroshi), planned to become a professional classical guitarist but suffered a hand injury at a young age. Hungering after a medium to express his creativity, he first worked with the canvas, then moved on to become a master woodblock artist. Fukada was born and raised in Tochigi Japan, surrounded by mountains and hills to the east, west and north while the Kanto Plains lie to the south. It is also famous for its ancient Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
