BIG IDEA: Students will create a name totem or symbol of their choice in the style of traditional paper cutting.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How do old traditions of past allow us to move forward in the future and what are some ideas to expand on these past traditions?
KEY KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING:
· This is the folk art that evolved hundreds of years ago and is still alive. Through paper cutting artists can express their feelings, like storytelling, and can reach the hearts of the people at the same time. Because of its simplicity and details, a piece of art can be enjoyed forever.
· Recognize and identify the style of paper Wycinanki and paper crafts of other cultures
· Learn about traditions and symbolism.
Introduction: Paper cutting has been around for many centuries and is a type of folk art that has remained popular throughout time. Started in China over 2000 years ago, paper cutting has spread around the world and different countries and cultures have adapted and changed it according to their traditions. Because the materials and supplies for this type of art are fairly inexpensive, many people of different economic status have been able to experiment with this art form. Paper cutting can be tailored for all ranges of skill from beginners to experts. Some of the most basic paper cutting can be shapes that only take minutes to create while other artists work for hundreds of hours to create complex and very detailed scenes.
STUDENTS WILL:
· Practice fine motor skills
· Create designs in the style of traditional paper cutting while learning and practicing balance and symmetry
DESIGN PROCESS:
1. On an 11x17 paper fill the paper (using up the negative space) with your name or traditional subject in cursive or print.
2. Fill in your letters to create “bubble” letters. Make sure all letters are attached (like a spider web) and fix as needed
3. Cut out negative space so you are left with just your “bubble name”
4. Paste onto another piece of paper
5. Cut around border of 2nd layer. Leave at least a quarter inch from your name
6. Follow last step as much as you want. You should have at least 3 layers
7. Add and embellish with colored pencil, oil pastel, added paper
8. Think outside of the box and change as needed to show creativity.

· With old traditions come new, to expand and improve upon through time and in the future.
· As symmetry underlies nature, science and mathematics, many problems can be solved and many issues resolved by the application of principles based on symmetry.
