BIG IDEA: Students will create a self-portrait in the colorful style of Bisa Butler using symbolic patterns and textile inspiration.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How would you define identity? What makes you who you are? What makes you different or similar to other people? What do you value in life (school, family, experiences)? How does your family, ethnicity, religion influence your identity? How is identity reflected on an artwork? What symbols or imagery could you use to represent identity in your own art?

Formative: Sketchbook use, feedback to guide through creative process to deepen understanding of goals and improve performance, development of artwork. Small group discussions and peer critiques of student’s work.
Summative: ● Final project: Identity and exploration of self aspects represented on final self portrait, use of symbolism and representation. Added features and details, and use of various materials. Work and details are found around the whole final piece. ● Graphic organizer: Create graphic organizer (to be continued in lesson #3) and fill in first section with terms describing themselves, possible imagery they relate with, hobbies or things they like and value. ● Written reflection: A final reflection describing what they discovered working on this project, how it differs from the family digital collage, how they used symbolism and textile media to represent themselves, what they learned with the lesson and how their views were expanded. Key vocabulary terms and concepts should be included. ● Class participation: response to artwork, online research, attention to demonstrations and respect of classmates’ work area. Overall cleanup and art classroom behavior.

- Explore their own personal identity and build up on concepts of ancestry, ethnicity, religion and community through the use of textiles as they develop an expressionist self portrait.
- Investigate symbolism, representation through the creation of a self portrait to portray identity.
- Expand knowledge on spatial arrangements and portraiture; will experiment and apply techniques such as textile collage making and mixed media, along with drawing, planning, color selection and application.
- Analyze artwork to widen their creative visual thinking skills and expand vocabulary.
